Blue Peter Shoebiz Appeal

JW collected shoes to raise money for Malawi through the Blue Peter Shoe Biz appeal. There are many people in Malawi with AIDS. Another huge problem is the fact that Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Many children have no parents and are left to look after themselves. The money raised through Blue Peter selling the collected shoes will be used to help many people in Malawi. JW pupils helped to promote and collect the shoes. JW must be commended for their dedication to this project with the end result being well over 200 shoes collected. When the Mayor heard of the great work by JW, he felt he had to come to Clounagh JHS to congratulate the class. Well Done, JW!

School website now available in Portuguese

In recent years, we have enrolled a number of foreign pupils at Clounagh, some of whom arrived in the country with little understanding of English. In order to give such pupils, now and in the future, a better experience of the school website, we've added a Portuguese language translation button (see top right). The service is provided by Google. Unfortunately, other relevant languages such as Polish and Lithuanian are not available at this time. The translation is likely to far from perfect, as it is an automated process with no human interaction, but should still prove useful.

Visit to the Tayto Castle

Classes IB and M found out first-hand how our favourite snacks - crisps - are made. Both classes went along to the Tayto Castle in Tandragee for a detailed tour, as part of a Geography trip. We were taken around all the different rooms and discovered that making crisps is far from simple. There are many different processes the crisps have to go through to ensure that we can safely eat them. As there are many different flavours of crisp, each flavour has to be carefully constructed and inspected. The potatoes are grown by the finest farmers, so we can have the best crisps. They are kept in dark and cold conditions to achieve the best possible outcome. They have to go through numerous processes: washing, packaging, peeling, slicing, and further stages done by machines alongside computers. But even though most processes are carried out by machines, people are employed to make everything go that little bit faster. We tasted warm crisps stright out of the oven, without flavour, and then compared them to flavoured ones - what a difference!

We all enjoyed our visit to the Tayto Factory, and it became very useful to our Geography studies. And I think we all enjoyed our free packs of crisps, too!

Assembly: Similarities and Differences

On Tuesday 7 November, 8C made a short presentation to Year 8 assembly on the topic Similarities and Differences. Each pupil in the class represented a child from another country or region. The aim was to point out that, even though we speak a different language or dialect, we all have "the same hopes, fears and feelings." 8C would like to thank their mentors (Friendly Faces: Sam Cheung and Chloe Bell) who helped them research and prepare the presentation.

As part of the Ulster Scots cultural initiative, a party of Ulster Scots traditional musicians visited the school on Thursday. The musicians played Lambeg drums, flutes, fiddles, and billy goat drums, to the rapturous applause of the pupils. A highly enjoyable and entertaining concert.

Kathryn, Chloe & Louise win the UTU writing competition

This year the Ulster Teachers Union organised a competition in association with the Campaign for Global Education. Around the world, ten million children are unable to read and write. This campaign promotes the Millennium Goal that every child should have access to education by the year 2015. About 80 pupils from Year 8 classes AR & AW and Year 9 classes EB & GB accepted the challenge to describe their ideal teacher. Three pupils from EB received the top three places, equalling last year's achievement. Right to left: Kathryn (1st place), Chloe (2nd place), and Louise (3rd place). The girls received their prizes at a reception in UTU Headquarters on Wednesday, 28 June. Congratulations!

Trip to Greenhill YMCA

The Under 14 Rugby Squad boys who were awarded the School Colours went on a three-day trip to Greenhill YMCA in Newcastle. Activities included rock climbing, absailing, and a trek to the top of Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh.

"There's a panther in the school!"

Once in a blue moon, on the news, you'll hear a story about a "big cat" (such as a tiger or panther) being spotted on the loose in the countryside somewhere. So how does an animal like that make its way into our country? Often it was illegally imported as a young cub by a foolish family who wanted an exotic pet. Unfortunately such people don't have the foresight to consider how they'll cope when the cute little furball grows up into a fierce predator. So, to avoid the authorities, they let it loose into the wild. But what if the beast wanders out of the countryside and into your town? What if it wanders into your school?

Over the course of 2005/06, the school's Year 9 Filmmaking Club met each Wednesday afternoon to produce a movie about the scenario described above. The film's running time ended up being 18-minutes - twice as long as any previous film.

This morning, the film received a hearty round of applause from all of Year 8, who watched it during assembly. Congratulations to the members of the Filmmaking Club 2005/06: Adam Gordon, Andrew White, Sam Cheung, Andrew Taylor, Eddie Quin, and Arran Stanley, James Knight and Adam Chambers.

The Handwritten Bible project

The Bible Society in Northern Ireland is encouraging people from all walks of life to participate in producing a Handwritten Bible for Ireland. Many church and school groups have already written their parts. Recently, seventeen members of Clounagh Junior High School's Scripture Union took part in the project under the guidance of Mrs Rosemary Clarke (head of RE and SU leader). The pupils had to copy several Psalms and part of the Gospel of St. John.

Year 8 pupil Luke Flannigan wrote the following about his involvement in the Handwritten Bible project: "When I was writing out the Scriptures, I felt under pressure, in case I made a mistake. Now I know how the scribes felt in Bible times. They must have been very frustrated when they made a mistake, because they had to start a new skin. Fortunately for me, all I had to do was to rule a line through any mistake."

Prize Night

Yesterday evening's prize-giving ceremony was accompanied by performances from many talented Clounagh pupils: Nathan Heyburn, Andrew Slaine, Andrew Proctor and Ryan Bailie performed some blues music; Cherith Rodgers and Hanna Moffett each sang a solo; Hannah Kernaghan, Hannah Forbes, Kerry Morrison and Elaine Abraham performed a hard shoe dance; the drama club performed a short sketch; Sophie McClelland and Emma Burney performed a dance duet. Young Enterprise Day

Year 8 pupils at Clounagh attended a specially organised day to assist with their transition to Year 9 in September. The day was organised by Young Enterprise Northern Ireland and was part of The Big School: Moving On initiative. The pupils took part in team-building and target-setting exercises to promote confidence and careers awareness.

Not content with claiming several awards already this year, the senior class of Clounagh's Learning Support Centre has gone on to win the Young Enterprise Programme award for Junior Team of the Year. The contest was held on Friday 9 June at Belfast City Hall, with schools from all over the province competing. Congratulations to the Clounagh pupils!

New athletics records: Zara & Bethany

This year introduces a new event for Year 9 girls: the 75 Metre Hurdles. The winner, and first record holder, of this event is Zara (left) with an excellent time of 13.6 seconds (scoring 8th in Ulster).

Bethany (right) recently shattered the school record for the Year 10 Girls Shot Putt with a distance of 9.64 metres (scoring 2nd in the Districts and 2nd in Ulster). Congratulations to both girls!

Party Political Webcast

Groups of Year 10 pupils have created their own political parties with their own particular agendas. In addition to the many promotional posters on the corridor walls, four parties had the opportunity to webcast their statements here on the school website, in the form of an oral presentation with the aid of Powerpoint. District Athletics winners

In the minor boys, Kenneth Anderson won the 800m and long jump. Kenneth also competed in the 4x100m relay, with Andrew Richardson, Jordan Wilson and Lewis Forsythe; the team won the event. Andrew Richardson qualified 2nd in high jump. Lewis Forsythe qualified 3rd in shot putt.

In the junior boys, Christopher Colvin won the triple jump, also qualifying 2nd in the 200m, making the Ulster Final. Gareth Crooks won the shot putt, qualifying 3rd in the discus.

Regarding the girls, Rachel Calvin won the 100m, also coming 2nd in the 200m and qualifying. Bethany Ebron, whose event was shot putt, came 2nd in District, 2nd in Ulster and 8th in Ireland.

2nd place at Youth Games for Southern RDS

Four Clounagh girls, previously selected for the Southern Regional Development Squad Under 15 Hockey Tournament, represented the SELB at the Sports Council Youth Games at Queens University on Saturday 13 May. At full time, with no score on either side, the game switched to Golden Goal, at which point the SELB team narrowly missed 1st place. Well done, girls, on coming a very close 2nd. Rachel wins 100m at Districts

Junior Company Winners and Outstanding Individual awards for Clounagh pupils

On Tuesday 9 May, the senior class of Clounagh's Learning Support Centre attended a Young Enterprise Southern Region Celebration Event at the Market Place Theatre in Armagh. The pupils, calling themselves The Beech Company, were delighted to be awarded Junior Company Winners. Adam Gordon, our Managing Director, was presented with an Outstanding Individual award. This provided the perfect end to a very enjoyable and successful day for the Learning Support Centre.

Belated news: Letters to G8 leaders

In 2005 several charities focused the attention of the world on the millions of children worldwide who live in poverty and are unable to go to school. The campaign culminated in concerts and protests in Edinburgh coinciding with the G8 Summit.

Class EB produced models to represent some of the disadvantaged children. These were taken to Edinburgh for the G8 Summit. The class also entered a competition in which they wrote letters to the leaders of the G8 countries. Three pupils won the top prizes for the Key Stage 3 level. In addition to individual prizes, the class received a certificate and a selection of books for the school library. Well done, EB!

Clounagh staff run Belfast City Marathon for orphanage

Five members of staff at Clounagh Junior High School took part in the Belfast City Marathon on Monday 1 May (left to right: Mr Graham, Mr Eakin, Mr Sloan, Mr Farr and Miss Fleming). They ran as a relay team, completing the full 25-mile course in 3 hours 50 mins. The purpose of the marathon was to raise money for Katya Vanchev orphanage in Bulgaria, which the school visits each February during the annual ski trip. Special thanks to those pupils who will be attending next year's ski trip, who sponsored the relay team.

A choir from LaGrange, USA, performs at Clounagh

Craigavon has a sister city in the USA called LaGrange in the State of Georgia. A choir from LaGrange is currently touring Ireland. Last week we were delighted to hear them perform a short concert at Clounagh Junior High School.

We also gave the American visitors a taste of Irish music and dance, with performances by talented Clounagh pupils: Hannah and Hannah (Irish dancing); Cherith (singing "You Raise Me Up") accompanied by Andrew on drums; Jonathan (Lambeg drum); Christopher (fiddle).

The audience was made up of pupils from two local Primary Schools: Millington and Hart Memorial. Special thanks to Millington teacher Mr Qua for his musical accompaniment.

David Humphries visits Clounagh

David Humphries, captain of the Ulster rugby team that won the Heinekin Cup in 1999 and the most capped Irish out half of all time, visited Clounagh Junior High on Thursday 6 April, where he spent time with with school's rugby teams, providing some expert tips. On the news later that day, David announced his international retirement, though he will continue to play for Ulster.

Megan selected for SELB U15 hockey team

William wins Moy Park Challenge

Congratulations to Clounagh pupil William, winner of this year's Moy Park Challenge. William's T-shirt design was selected out of over 180 entries from various schools. Moy Park Managing Director Trefor Campbell presents William with the trophy. Many local businesses attended the presentation.

Clounagh wins Best Marketing Team at Dundalk Trade Fair

The Beech Company is made up of pupils from Clounagh's Learning Support Centre. The company product line consists of bread boards and tie racks made in Beech wood. After winning the Young Enterprise Programme in February, the pupils attended the Dundalk Cross-Border Trade Fair, where they were awarded the title "Winner of Best Marketing Team 2006."

Managing Director Adam (top photo, 4th pupil from left) was chosen to thank Dundalk Grammar School for their invitation to the fair, and to thank the staff of The Marshes Shopping Centre for their hospitality.

British Isles Schools Swimming Championships

On Saturday 18 March, Stefan brought great honour to himself and the school by winning the 100m breast-stroke at the British Isles Schools Swimming Championships.

Representing Irish Schools, Stefan swam a personal best time of 1 minute 11 seconds to comfortably win (the second place swimming time was 1 min 12.9 secs). The championships were held in Edinburgh and included all the best British swimmers in Stefan's age group.

Stefan is also our Head Boy and has carried out his duties this year with great distinction. Well done, Stefan!

Ryan signs contract with Everton

Ryan, a past pupil of our school, is pictured here with his parents and brothers Raymond & David, signing a 3-year professional contract with Everton Football Club.

Ryan is currently a member of the Northern Ireland Under 19 Squad and is progressing well at Everton. He plays regularly for the Youth Team and has also featured for the Reserves.

His brother Raymond currently plays for the Clounagh U14 team, while his other brother David was a member of Clounagh rugby teams and has represented Portadown Rugby Club 1st XV this season.

Clounagh wins Young Enterprise Programme

Pupils from the senior class of Clounagh's Learning Support Centre participated in this year's Young Enterprise Programme, competing against around twenty-five schools in a trade fair at Rushmere Shopping Centre on Friday 10 February. Clounagh was judged runner up for Best Display, winner of Best Product, and Overall Winner. The pupils' products consisted of bread boards and tie racks, all hand-made during Technology class, in Beech wood, hence their company name, The Beech Company. As a follow-up to their success, the pupils will be attenting another trade fair in Dundalk on 11 March.

Ski trip to Bulgaria

On 4 February the ninth annual ski trip left for Pamporovo, Bulgaria. This was the largest group yet, with 66 pupils from years 9 and 10. The pupils, as usual, had a great experience, and by the end of the week even the 60 first-timers were able to ski green, blue and the occasional red runs.

As in previous years, a group of Clounagh pupils visited Katya Vanchev orphanage. This year, thanks to many generous donations, the pupils gave £2,300, plus ski jackets, football kits, and many sweets, to the children, who are less fortunate than themselves. Everyone found it a worthwhile and moving experience.

Once again, the ski party had a thoroughly enjoyable and very successful week.

Visit from Native Americans

On Thursday 6 October Pastor Larry Brown and his wife Dawn spent the day in Clounagh Junior High School, visiting various Religious Education classes. Pastor Brown is a Native American from the Cherokee tribe. His Indian name is Grizzly Bear Tallwalker, given to him because he touched two live bears. Pastor Brown gave the classes a brief history of the Cherokee Indians, and played their national anthem, "Amazing Grace," on his flute. Pastor Brown and his wife live on the edge of the Mojave Desert in California. They also spoke to the whole school assembly on Friday 14 October, when they played some Indian music from their newly released CD.

The Aimhigher Roadshow high-tech trailer visits Clounagh Junior High School annually to provide pupils with clear information on the routes to Higher Education and on the financial support available to students in HE. The Aimhigher Roadshow experience has been designed to promote the benefits and dispel the myths about HE. It acts also as a tool to motivate and inspire pupils who might not otherwise have considered aiming for study at university.

Various teams of boys and girls battled it out all day for the trophy in this year's Christmas Tug-of-War contest. When it finally came down to one team of boys versus one team of girls, the boys were just no match. Well done, girls!

Art teacher runs NY Marathon for charity

Miss Fleming (Art & Design teacher) with Year 8 pupils, who presented her with a cheque for £318 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Children from AB took part in selling quiz sheets for Macmillan Cancer, raising an additional £126. Elaine (middle row, far left) came up with the idea, and Jenna & Amy (3rd and 4th from left) sold the most sheets.
